Returning to Our

Natural State

Fundamental to understanding mindfulness practice is that beneath the waves of emotions and thoughts exists a more primordial state of mind that is free of concepts, sometimes described as our "natural state". Practice is an exploration of how to let go or relax into this experience.

It can be approached through bringing awareness to our bodies, to appreciating the flux of emotions that wash through us every day and to noticing the patterns of our thoughts dispassionately. Traditionally they are spoken of as Body, Speech and Mind.

Our weekly “sits” provide a supported space for mindfulness practice. Our usual format is 20 minutes of guided meditation, followed by 15 minutes of silence. Then Richard will respond to any questions and give a short talk on a point of practice or we explore different forms of meditation.

Practicing together helps builds a community upholding the values to be found in cultivating presence, clarity and compassion.

Cost is, as always, by dana. There is a bowl at the entrance of the studio if attending in person. Those attending on Zoom may contribute to the suggested charity in the term email sent out by Gaby.

Dana is often taken to simply mean donation or gift. Dana is a Buddhist teaching about generosity of spirit or the sharing of blessings, the aspiration to generate health and goodwill in all the cycles of giving and receiving; the transactions of daily life. In reflecting on the practice of dana one begins to understand the interdependence of life. Dana is a gift that supports the livelihood of the teacher and his family. In turn the teachings offered are to support you in meeting with life with wisdom and compassion. Each participant arrives at the amount of dana voluntarily. Teachers of the Dharma are supported by considerate donation. Following Buddhist tradition, Richard charges no fee for teaching.  It is customary to offer dana at the beginning of the class (there is usually a bowl at near the entrance). Giving prior to the teaching supports the experience of openness and generosity.

Twice a year at Yoga Moves/Centre for Movement Studies, we run a series of classes for those wishing to learn to meditate or to reinvigorate their existing practice. Having completed the course, participants are welcome to join the weekly Friday morning or Thursday night 'sits'. Those who attend the regular Friday morning and Thursday night 'sits' also receive occasional study notes on topics related to practice should they wish to further their understanding. All course details are below - please read them before contacting Gaby.

An Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation

4 week course

This four-week series is for those interested in learning to meditate and meditators who want to enliven their practice. Krystyna is following in local teacher Richard Yin’s tradition of presenting meditation with a common sense and engaging approach. The aim is to explore how, beyond technique, meditation might offer a path to finding peace in a frantic world and help one orientate towards living a meaningful life founded on values. The classes are preceded by an email component to allow for some background information as well as small meditation exercises that can be explored at home.

Following the completion of the course, you are welcome to attend the weekly community sessions at the studio on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings to continue your practice as casually or as regularly as you like.

Dates and Times: TBA

Venue: In studio and online on Zoom, you will be sent a link.

Bookings: As this is a series, please plan to attend every class. Repeaters welcome. Bookings are required – please register by contacting:
