A 10km Hike at Piesse Brook, Kalamunda

Sometimes, lovely adventures that coax us out of our heads and back into our embodied selves are right on our doorstep. Escape the city and immerse yourself in the beauty of spring in Piesse Brook, Kalamunda—just a short drive from Perth, yet a world away in terms of peace and natural beauty. This 10km guided walk offers an immersive bush experience, where the rhythms of nature invite you to slow down, move with mindfulness, and reconnect with yourself and the natural world.
Led by Alan Moffat, a seasoned bushwalker with over 30 years of experience, and Sara Elderfield, a Feldenkrais practitioner who leads hiking retreats overseas, this walk is more than just a bush walk; Alan will guide you safely through the stunning Piesse Brook area, offering insights into the local flora, fauna, and history along the way and Sara will suggest some awareness-based practices designed to enhance walking ease and power. The walk will include periods of silence, and reflective pauses to build mindfulness with feeling.
Whether you’re looking to improve your walking technique or your hiking skills or simply enjoy a day in nature with like-minded others, this walk is perfect for those who love walking and being immersed in nature without needing to venture far from home.

Time: Meet at 8:45am for a 9:00am start
Duration: 4.5 – 5.5 hours including breaks and lunch
Meeting Point: Piesse Brook Carpark, 115 Spring Road, Kalamunda (look for the Piesse Brook Interpretive Trail sign – free parking available)
Distance: 10km loop | Moderate – Intermediate grade.
What to bring: Water, snacks and your lunch, sturdy hiking or walking shoes, sun protection, rain gear (optional), walking poles (optional but advisable if you have them).
Cost: $60 early birds by Wednesday 13th August OR $70 per person.
$15 nonrefundable deposit. Cancellations before 12pm 18th August 2025 receive 50 percent of monies received. No refunds after this time.

Walk Leaders:
Alan Moffat: With over 30 years of bushwalking experience exploring some of the most rugged and breathtaking landscapes in Australia, Alan Moffat is a passionate and highly skilled outdoor adventurer. He has walked every section of Western Australia's Bibbulmun Track at least three times and has tackled iconic Australian treks including Tasmania's Overland Track, the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory, and multiple routes through the alpine wilderness of Mt Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. His international walking experience spans multi-day hikes in New Zealand, Vietnam, and France.
Alan ran his own bushwalking business and is a founding member and Walk Leader of Redtail Bushwalkers—a community of over 1,800 members who specialise in off-track navigation using GPS waypoints. For many years he led groups of up to 14 Year 10 boys on a demanding eleven-day outdoor program, during which students carried all their food and equipment while walking up to 30 kilometres per day. He is proficient in reading topographical maps and navigating with compass and GPS.
An experienced birder, Alan can identify many bird species by sight and sound. He also has a strong interest in native wildflowers, bush tucker, and traditional bush medicine, adding depth and cultural awareness to his guided walks.
Sara Elderfield: Passionate about teaching movement so that it is useful in daily life and not just in a class, Sara is a certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner who has been teaching yoga and meditation since 1996 and the Feldenkrais Method® since 2006. She teaches weekly group classes (Awareness Through Movement®) as well as seeing clients for individual lessons (Functional Integration®). She was the administrative director of the most recent Perth Feldenkrais practitioner training programme (2014-2017) and since 2006, she has run the Centre for Movement Studies studio which is based in Shenton Park and regularly hosts/organizes workshops and classes taught by other local and international teachers of yoga, Feldenkrais Method® and meditation. In addition to her weekly classes, Sara takes groups overseas most years (Bali, Nepal, Vietnam, Tibet and France) on walking, Feldenkrais®, yoga and meditation retreats. The next retreat is in the south of France, 5th – 18th October 2025.
