Feldenkrais Use It or
Lose It for the Over 70s
Mobility, Strength and Balance for Everyday Life
As we get older, it’s easy to do a little less of the things that once came naturally — getting down to the floor, getting up from a chair, turning to look behind us, reaching overhead, walking with confidence or balancing on one leg. And the less we do something, the harder it can become. This class is about keeping those everyday movements in use.
We explore practical movements that help maintain and improve mobility, strength, balance, coordination and confidence. We work mainly with a chair and in standing, using Feldenkrais principles to help you notice how you move and find easier, more efficient ways of doing things. There will also be specific strength, balance and mobility exercises, with options to make them easier or more challenging.
The aim isn’t to push yourself to the limit or to become more flexible or stronger for its own sake. It’s to keep your body capable and adaptable for the things you want to keep doing — walking, bending, reaching, turning, carrying, getting in and out of chairs and, importantly, getting down to and back up from the floor.
You don’t have to be fit, flexible or particularly coordinated to join in. We work with where you are now and gradually build from there.
Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) is a guided movement process that uses attention and variation to engage the nervous system in learning. By refining sensory awareness (proprioceptive, vestibular, and visual), the brain updates how actions are organised, supporting neuroplastic change. Improvements in function — such as balance, agility, coordination, and posture — emerge as a result of this learning, rather than through effort or correction.
